1886 Automobile History
- Karl Benz in Germany designs a three-wheel vehicles using the Nicholas Otto four-cycle gasoline-powered engine. He obtains a German patent for his "Motorwagon" in January 1886.
- Another German, Gottlieb Daimler, working independently, builds a four-wheel automobile using the same Otto engine.
Benz and Daimler earn credit as developers of the first workable gasoline-powered vehicles; their creation attract little attention in America. By the early 1890s, European automobiles are in regular production.
- In America, Ransom Olds begins experiments with three-wheeled steam vehicles.
